Boldly Shaping Beloved Communities
"Our goal is to create a beloved community and this will require a qualitative change in our souls as well as a quantitative change in our lives.”
Despite our enthusiasm around community in our culture today, we've lost the true meaning. We use community as a safety blanket to withdraw into our bubbles of comfort when we should be using it to bridge the gaps that divide us.
We want to take a step towards building the type of beloved community that Atlanta legend Martin Luther King dreamed of – a community that embraces the inherent messiness of our open and equal society, reconciles our individual differences, and brings love and compassion to the center of our shared experience.
We believe this starts with ourselves – understanding our own flaws, strengths, and purpose and how we want to use them to shape the world. We need to then build authentic connections with others, ones that are built on empathy and authenticity. Only when we truly connect, can we then engage and commit to sustaining our beloved communities.
At SHAPE NAC 2019, we want to create an environment where we can take a step towards making a meaningful change in our mindsets and in our lives. As Shapers, you will be challenged to see the world from a different perspective and confront your own biases; have difficult dialogues and build new friendships; support the work of another and start to share your own beloved communities.
